Circadian Rhythm

In his vitamin D post JB raised the notion of the circadian rhythm. I think it’s accepted that different folk have different circadian rhythms, which goes to explain why some people are morning people, and others are not. I’m one of those people who has nothing against early morning, but just wish it was scheduled later in the day.

Having said that, I’ve experienced that when I do manage get to up earlier (even if I’m fighting and screaming in protest), I am often able to settle much more readily into a productive state conducive for writing, thinking, and even house cleaning (this last one not nearly as often). This early morning experience resulted in a blog post called Early Morning Key to Productive Writing Routine:

While I don’t think one can argue that one circadian rhythm is better than another, it does seem possible for one to have a sense that they’d better function if they could somehow reset their circadian rhythms so that, as in my case, it became more natural and less stressful to be up and working by 0600h. I’ll be interested to see if taking my vitamin D first thing in the morning, as suggested by JB in his other post, helps me to shift my circadian rhythm.

But, I wonder if there are other ways to go about this. Any suggestions?



PS Interestingly, the only time I have not had problems getting up early was when I was in Chennai, India. Perhaps it was being half a world away from where I normally was, or the effect of the heat, or just that the whole city seemed to awake at the same time, thanks in large part to neighborhood roosters who woke before the sun.

If you eat breakfast immediately upon waking, you will wake up earlier the next day.

You could also set an alarm, wake up early, take Vit D, go back to bed, and reset your clock that way.

Vit-D is far more effective than Melatonin at resetting your entire clock. Be careful or nausea and depression can result (temporary - lasts one day) if you’re creating 12 hour swings.

It takes 3-5 hours for me to reach peak alertness after ingestion.

I actually just took this a bit further, and found a way to solve my problem of staying up progressively later, without using willpower or experiencing stress
